How to Use Crystal Cat Litter the Right Way (Scoop, Stir, Replace)

Here's a secret from our own customer reviews: the people happiest with crystal litter use it differently than the people who aren't. The difference isn't the cat. It's technique carried over from clay.

The three-step routine

1. Scoop solids daily. That's the only daily job. Solids out, done in thirty seconds.

2. Stir, don't excavate. Give the crystals a gentle rake so fresh surfaces face up. One of our longtime customers put it perfectly: don't mix from the very bottom every day — constantly dredging saturated crystals to the top releases odor instead of trapping it. A light stir is enough.

3. Replace monthly. One 8 lb bag lasts up to 30 days for one cat. When the crystals have absorbed their fill — you'll notice color change to yellowish and odor returning — bag the whole batch, rinse the box, pour fresh.

Why this works

Silica pearls absorb up to 40× their weight in liquid, then let moisture evaporate while holding odor inside. The system needs dry crystals on the surface to catch the next visit. Daily deep-mixing defeats it; gentle stirring feeds it.

Depth matters too

Pour about 2 inches. Too shallow and liquid hits the pan before crystals catch it; too deep just wastes pearls a digger will fling over the side.

Multi-cat adjustment

Two cats sharing a box means changing roughly twice as often — or better, one box per cat. The 5× faster odor control vs clay holds either way, but no litter beats arithmetic. More on that here: Does Crystal Litter Work for Multi-Cat Homes?
